Q/Resonance Question

Hello

I think that this is a bit of a easy question, but I can`t get it straight in my mind, and I`m sure that someone will put me right. 

When you adjust the resonance control on a filter module, are you increasing the gain at the cutoff frequency, or are you changing the resonant frequency of the filter circuit leading to increased power transfer at different frequency, or something completely different?

Thanks for any thoughts that anyone has on this.
