For you hardcore roll-your-own types, Microchip has a 14 page .pdf
file that provides the details of the programming specs.  I do not
have the exact url for the download, but the data sheet name has
"PIC16F8X" at the top of the page and the title is "EEPROM Memory
Programming Specification."  There is a code at the bottom of the
page --  DS30262A -- that may help in finding the file on the 
Microchip web site.  It tells you everything you would need to know
to build the hardware and software to program a F84 PIC.  

This data sheet ain't for beginners!  But, even if you have bought
a programmer or just want to work from Dr. Covington's (or David
Tait's) circuits and software, the data sheet is well-written and
will help you to conceptualize the process.
