Hello Ho Ho list,
Although I will agree that linear supplies are better suited for our
particular application, it should be noted that many of today's top-quality
professional synthesizers have switching power supplies. For instance, the
Yamaha TX-816, the DX7-II, the Roland XP-80, most Akai samplers, and many
others. I have used these instruments in many studios and have never had
problems with noise (OK... the TX-816 was a little hissy, but that was 12-bit
FM hash, not power supply noise!)
I would say that it's worth a try, if you already have the supplies. The
most important thing is to be sure that your circuits present at least the
minimum load that the supply expects to see. (this includes any unused
sections, such a +5 volt section - you may need to strap a big resistor
across it to keep it happy) What is the minimum load required?
Unfortunately, you'd have to ask the manufacturer of the supply to know for
sure.
On the other hand, It's not really too difficult or expensive to build an
effective little linear supply with 78xx regulators.
