Exactly. In this case I would assume that Martin is standing at the 
focus of a parabola or hyperbola, which works well in the simplex 
mode.

Inside an elliptical reflector, put the flashtube at one focus and 
the lasing medium (ruby rod works well) at the other. Or is this 
something entirely different?
