I wasn't going to post this here, because I try not to contribute to long
off-topic threads. Especially since I'm just a chronic lurker.

I've decided to post it anyway, since there are probably people on here
who will find it useful. To tie in with previous discussion, this model
is made by Sharp, not Sony. So you can buy one without supporting Sony.

Also, some comments have been made about the future of the Minidisc format,
doubting the continued availability of blank disks. Minidisc hasn't been
such a big deal in the USA, but they're selling like crazy in Japan, and
have been for years. That's why the price of disks has dropped from about
$20 each (what they cost when I bought my home unit) to about $3 each now.
Even if Minidisc dies out in the States, there are enough users to keep
the media available for a long time. If it gets really bad, I might have
to mail order them, instead of just walking into any Best Buy store.

Anyhow- here's the scoop. I sent this to Digital Hell yesterday...

I've wanted a portable Minidisc recorder for a few years,
so I can carry it around and sample the world, without
being bothered with the expense and hassle of DAT.

I just found a killer deal on a very nice one- it's $150.
You might even be able to get one for less than that, as
Egghead has also been auctioning some of them. They're
refurbished, with a 30 day warranty, for about half the
normal price of $300-$350. Mine's on the way...

It has a mic preamp, a 148 minute mono recording mode,
optical SPDIF input (no out), and a 5 hour lithium ion
rechargable battery.

It also has a voice activated mode, so it could probably
be used as a hi-fi bug. Microphone, telephone adapter,
and Linda Tripp jokes not included.

If you want one, grab it soon. They only have 53 left.
