Programmable midi controllers were a step in the right direction, but
there's still a long way from a nicely layed out, clearly labelled dedicated
front panel for each synth, to an anonymous bank of regularly spaced
identical pots.
You need more than 127 steps for a lot of functions too, never mind the
problems with midi bandwidth under heavy controller usage.
