It depends.  Do you want your signal ground (the Shield to pin 1) to meet
your chassis ground in whatever youre hooking up?  Usually, the answer is yes.

As I rember, Some XLRs (maybe Switchcraft 7As) are built in such a way that
when you put the barrel back on, it'll contact the pin 1 housing.
