I tend to agree that eventually digital emulations of analogue will be
complete enough, and running on powerful enough hardware that it will be
virtually impossible to tell sonically which is real and which is emulated,
but that is beside the point.
There is more to a synth than the ac signal at the output jack.
Until the digital emulation can generate a convincing, tactile 3d interface
that looks and feels like a bank of knobs, the user experince wont be the
same, and for something as subjective an emotionally involved as music
making, you wont get the same end result.
Also, from an historical perspective, would you rather go to a museum to see
a genuine object from the past, or would a museum full of perfect
reproductions be just as good ?
