XML for schematics?

I haven't been following industry CAD issues very much lately, so does
anybody know...

Is there currently any "standard" for describing schematic diagrams in
XML?  It seems like a perfectly suited technology and if nobody else
is doing it I have some thoughts on how to procede.  

(XML is a web standard for describing document-like data of arbitrary
type in a format very similiar to HTML.  There are Java tools readily
available for reading, writing and validating XML.  A Java applet
could conceivably take an XML schematic and display it on a web page.)
