problem with sequential Pro1 or Mpu101

I've been trying to sequence my pro1 with my computer by using the roland
mpu 101 midi to cv interface. I made sure all the conections are correct.
When I write a pattern in my computer sequencer for the pro1 it plays but
only with the drone on. Now the part I dont understand is the gate should be
able to stop the note or seperate the note from the next one instead of a
continuous drone. I don't know if the pro1 is unable to play seperate notes
or if my cv interface has a problem. I've tried different channels and they
all have the same result. the gate light on the mpu lights up but I dont
know if its sending the signal to the gate in on the pro1.
