Tube preamp. "musical tube"

I have been thinking of rewiring one of my old SF Champ amps. I noticed the
oldest Champ ( 5C1) used a 6sj7 preamp tube. Also an old Bassman ( not sure
which incarnation ).

Are these tubes any kin to each other? 6sj7 and 6sn7. Most people lean
towards the 12ax7 for this type "tweed" mod. Any comments on different tonal
character between the 6 and 12? Your comment on "musical tube" has me
wondering.
