And don't forget the considerable voltage drops/tolerance your mains
supply may have (it is said to be worst in the USA, but also in Europe
+-10% is possible, and it may get worse if the monopolistic system
is changed to free market, because backup capacity and environment
is expensive.

This will make it necessary to overdimension the transformer voltage,
ie. more losses in the regulator.
