Super simple mixer ..

Hey folks, I need a little mixer for my instruments so I can have one output 
to my amp.  Would it be possible to just put a few input jacks (3 or 4) in 
one side of a box, a pot on each jack, and then wire it all to one output?  
If it's this simple, that would be great.  Any suggested starting value for 
the pots? linear or expo?  If its got to be more complex than this, are there 
are schemos on the web for something like this?  Any dedicated IC's for this 
that anyone's aware of?
