I have always been lucky. But I have never taken advantage or
relied on my luck. There has always been a sort of understanding
with the universe that as long as I'm a good guy and reasonably
generous things tend to go my way.

While on my way home from a small shopping trip, I turned into
the pawn shop down the street. I saw this guy trying the door,
cupping his eyes straining to see in the window, right under this
big red and blue neon sign declaring the place open.

As I walked from my car he turned and headed my way. Hey! I
said, Is he closed? The guy seemed to be about my age maybe
a little younger and reasonably well fed. He had this wonderful
little beard that was just showing signs of grey and a brown
beret on top of his head. "I can't get anybody to come to the door."
he said. "If there's somebody in there they must be asleep."

It was about here I noticed he was carrying a white strat. (Anybody
see where this is going?) I said. What do you have there? "Just
a Squire Strat." Were you selling of pawning I asked. "Well I thought
I would sell it" he said. "I was here a couple of days ago and he offered
me $40 dollars for it, almost nothing to pawn it." Well he's not here.
I said I might make you an offer. How about letting me look it over? He
handed me the guitar and I knew right away that it was new for all
pratical purposed. Not a scratch on it as they say. Well...I said, his
offer was a little low, but I really can't afford much more...Would
you take $50 bucks. "Sure" he said beats what I was offered. I
peeled of the $50 and he wrote me a receipt.

This was plenty! I was more than happy. The Strat is white just like
my other one. 3 sp pickups rosewood neck, flawless....But today
I found a SK-1 for $1.98 at the thrift. I don't want to push it..but I
think I'm going out again tomorrow.....
