Metal can package semi question..

hello all,
  I am resuming finishing my ASM  project and I think I remember not being 
too sure about the orientation of the 3140's MAT 02's and 2n45856's in my 
oscillators.  My wuestion is regarding the oientation orf the pins with 
realtion to the metal tab on the can package.  Do they read (with the tab at 
12'oclock) form 1-8 in a counterclockwise driection or from 1 to 8 in a 
counterclockwise direction?  thanks, I just dont want to blow anything up on 
the first power up....
Any quick hints about setting the trim pots?  (I have no scope...I dont even 
have a DMM!! : )   Anyone got a used scope that they want to sell cheap?) 
I think I read something a few years back about using headphones to roughly 
set the levels??  Bad idea?
