This is an old additive synthesis trick. Subtract two out-phase-sines 
and you get a scaled sine. Of course, the difference itself is 
out-of-phase and varies. I always wondered what the correction 
formula was myself.

This is also a good way to get scaled Lissajous figures with only 
integer math and a sine table.
