Many years ago (late 70's), during my first experiences on
eletroacoustic music (well, that's how I used to call those noises...) I
realized that I could make loops with cassette tapes, as I had only one
reel-to-reel tape machine, and used it to record my compositions. Not an
easy job, but worked fine.

You can have a set of cassetes, each one with something weird recorded,
ready to go. And as a bonus, you can play with the velocity control of
the motor: it's a trimpot, inside the motor's case, and it's not
difficult to put an external pot instead. Most cheap reel-to-reel
machines doesn't allow this mod.
