fpga/pal/pld

Dear all,

  hi, is there anyone out there who has experience with these programmable 
logic things? I dont know if I want FPGA/PAL/PLD, I dont even know what the 
differences are. I have a circuit which uses about 40 74hcxxx chips, and 
would like it on one.

  Can anyone offer advice/help?

  Are there starterkits? (I got one for my AVR)
  Are there any good books?
