Tempcos work to a very high degree and recovery is fast if you pot them together with the expo converter trannys. Actually there is usually nothing to recover from, as the tuning will not be affected much by a realistic temperature change. I don't expect people to stick hot soldering irons into my synth, at least not while I play it!
Tempcos are not difficult to come by and expensive. I got mine for $0.80 at Farnell.
Note that the heat buildup from a heated expo converter will make the rest of the VCO and all other parts of the synth to drift. Remember that you will usually have non-temperature compensated expo-converters in VCFs and such. And also remember that if you have many VCOs, the heat will add up.
