I've fixed enough defective synths in my time that only needed the most
basic of attention to fuses, switches, connectors etc.
If a synth owner is ignorant of this, do you think Doepfer will suggest they
have a tech give them a quote for repairs before they ship it to them ?

If someone believes their synth to be broken they may well take the money
and run rather than deal with the uncertainty and hassle of e-bay.
Many people have never heard of e-bay.
If Doepfer advertise this elsewhere than the Internet it will be even worse.

I don't know - if they only paid the offer price for it, then it will
probably be more profitable for them to sell 18 of their vco modules through
their distibutor network than to go thru the hassle of repairing then
finding buyers for individual synths.
However, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of a Doepfer Vintaj Synth Emporium
opening shortly...
