To Whom It May Concern:

(Copied to Analogue Heaven and Synth-DIY Internet Mailing Lists)

I have just read the offer posted on your Web site (
http://www.doepfer.com/cem3340.htm ) in which you suggest that owners of
defective classic synthesizers may sell them to you so that you can strip
out the Cutis CEM3340 chips needed for your oscillator module.

Not only does this seem to be a very expensive way of manufacturing
oscillator modules, given the variety of other stable oscillator designs
possible with readily available parts, I am of the opinion that this offer
will serve to drastically reduce the number of already rare 'classic'
synthesizers, that may only be in need of basic repair.

Also, I suspect some long-time owners of classic synthesizers, who may be
unaware of the current value of their instruments, may also be tempted to
part with them, only for them to be scrapped.

I would suggest that if Doepfer do not wish to upset and alienate a large
proportion of the users of analogue synthesizers, who probably also form a
significant part of the market for Doepfer products, you should not proceed
with this offer.

I have recently been considering the purchase of a couple of pieces of
Doepfer equipment (Drehbank, Regelwerk), but will certainly not be buying
anything from a company with a policy of classic synth vandalism, and will
advise anyone else with an interest in this area to do the same.

Colin Fraser
