:::take up a fair bit of board space.

And they might be difficult to turn if the pcb is mounted. I mean
later on service, if all is mounted. I have made some "wonderfull"
experimental boards which are now absolutely impossible to trim after
the board is inside the plastic box.
(This depends on the situation, of course. I take the vertical type in
most of the cases.)
As it was experimental I could drill little holes in the box without
too much grief. But I wouldn't like that to happen in a real module.
There are mounting kits where these horizontal types can be mounted on
the panel, for trims that have to be adjusted every 20 sessions or so
(drift etc.). I know a lot of Tektronix gear with the same feature.
