bad precision pot?

:::Maybe they were referring to a type where the actual wiper only make one turn but there is gears to make the knob turn 10 times? Something like the multiturn trimpots, which have the problems you describe.

So far I've never encountered any problems with cermet 10 turn trimmers.
But it is true that they are not made for many thousands of revolutions,
the cermet film is said to suffer. They are made for ocasional trimming.
