syncing lfo to MIDI

Or, syncing lfo to any kind of pulse stream I guess..
how is this normally done? What type of sync does
a midi-cv convertor with LFO give?

I'm thinking that if I only need the lfo to go up to 
say sixteenth note, then I can look at the spacing
between the clock pulses, and calculate how fast
to integrate a saw to give me the desired frequency.
If the 'end' clock pulse comes sooner than expected,
then end the cycle there, and if it is later, then 
just hold the integrator peak until it arrives.

I can see a synced lfo being pretty useful, but there
is going to be sweat and blood on the way.. unless
someone has some good ideas!
