I want to add: This doesn't make it impossible to accurately model your
topology with analogue circuitry, of course.
This would mean using a BBD line, for instance, with some feedback and
feedforward,
and modulating the mixing and feedback coefficients. *There* you would have
the obvious loop gain < 1 restriction, too, and a foldover stage would make
sense.
Thinking of it, this might be *the* way to go if we want to implement your
finding in
analogue hardware (and not analogue phase shifters at all).
What is the time between two of your samples n and (n-1) ?
