First let me say that I think this is one of the most comprehensive
and useful sites on analogue synths I've seen. And I owe its
author the most important hint for making a clone of the
old-style Korg MS-20 filter.
Having said that, I must add that I'm not too fond about this
very page on synth waveforms. I bet the waveform quoted
as "moog ramp" is not typical for a moog triangle wave, but
just the result of a misadjusted saw/triangle converter in one
particular Moog VCO. (Any Moog owner can confirm / correct
this ?)
Many of the other waveforms are clearly filtered versions.
I doubt the author claims that these are "raw" (unfiltered)
waveforms (but then again I don't understand Japanese).
What it looks like, are waveforms after a VCF, and after AC
coupling between VCO / VCF / VCA stages.
The "Korg MS square" is the best proof for AC coupling involved.
(Either from the coupling capacitors, or even from the MS-20's HPF)
The "OB saw" is clearly low pass filtered. (On my OB-8 the filter
will only go fully "open" when there is ADSR or Tracking applied,
not just with the Cutoff knob fully clockwise !)
The "Moog Saw" looks like processed by a tanh function - or
run thru a slightly overdriven Moog ladder filter.
Let me repeat that I think this is a great site, with many interesting
technical details to explore, and that the collection of waveforms
are very instructive too, as they show the output signals of
real life analogue synthesizers under fairly similar conditions (filters
wide open).
Makers of Virtual Analogue stuff who claim "no difference to analogue",
GO TAKE A LOOK THERE, and then tell us *which* analogue synth
you were emulating (;->).
