Excuse me, but what?
I really don't know the current situation of the Amiga scene or
development in the US, but here in Europe, I'd say we still have a nice
market of new and old hardware. You really don't have Amiga shops
anymore? Well, even if we have some in Germany for example, I have to
admit that the only real amiga store I have visited was in Tokyo.
The Sunrize soundcards were made in USA, right? Don't you have any of
these around anymore (the bigger model was multi channel?)? A new
soundcard was released a while ago (germany, check http://www.act-net.com/),
called Prelude. It's a ZII card so hardware wise it should run fine on an
A2000. Also there's Delfina (finnish, http://www.sci.fi/~petsoff/) which
is a ZII too. Both cards are generally much better than their pc rivals
(for example, Prelude can go up to 64khz and Delfina has mot dsp56002,
24bit. Check the web pages for details). ACT also sells a port of
Samplitude (yes, sek'd makes the pc port) for amigas. Though if you are
planning to do any serious hdr work with your Amy, you should naturally
have adequate hd's and processor etc. Both cards (any many of the old)
support AHI so a load of other modern software will also work.
My Amiga system is an A4000, with Cyberstorm mkI 060 with 36megs ram,
Cybervision 3D gfx card, A2232 serial card, Ariadne Ethernet, 2.5G hd,
4xCD and the usual heap of smaller Amys. Yes, I do my hdr on a pc, but
that's only because of SoundForge. I have actually though about getting a
soundcard just to play samples over midi.
Personally, it makes no difference even if AT never releases another
version of AmigaOS (I only use it to run Bars&Pipes), because I prefer
unixes (in this case, read linux) anyhow. The only reason why I haven't
bought a PPC processor yet, is that Phase5 is just about to release a
line of G3 and G4 cards, which will be much better than their old PPC
models (check www.phase5.de for details of the current as well as the
G3/G4 cards). All crucial linux software will be ported to PPCLinux,
thanks to all the PPC Mac users in the states.
If anyone has any questions about Amigas, I'd be happy to help. Then
again, I'm just a lad who loves bizarre hardware =)
(I have though about finally getting a SGI O2 this summer. Can't wait)
