software generated env

Damn jp6 got software generated env's! Didn't know that, there goes
the jp6... I wanted to have a polyphonic analogue synth with some
program memories as a study object (and fun of course!). So the
digital side of the synth should be out of the signal path. With what
resolution are the envs of say a p600 or jp6 generated? I can
imagine that if you would have an 8bit output of the cpu the DAC
should smooth the signal quite a lot in order to have a smooth VCF
sweep.

The best criterium to judge a synth which uses digital methods to
generate (a part of) the sound is frequency. I've read a book of
Curtis Roads "Computer and Music" I think it was (had 1600 pages). It
said that I've you wanted to change the frequency of a sound you'll
have to apply at least 21bits (depends on how nuch you sweep the
frequency, here it is the whole audio range) preferably 24bits for a
smooth sweep.

My question is can the signal path from the front panel CVs be
changed so that it bypasses the cpu without huge effort?
