from my experience of modern synths they tend to be surface mount
mainly... use micro-processors and/or DSP's... there is very little
inside them...

Classic example of this was when I opened my Tx81z, one damn chip!!!
my SY85 had more chips in but again, micros and DSP's and all surface
mount...

Don't get me wrong these things sound great, but how the hell is the
amater diy nut supposed to learn from these? play with the them and
modify them? and therefore become the next breed of synth designers?

It seems to me that more and more manufacturers are content with
simply shifting boxs and not putting effort into it... IBM went the
same way with PC's a while back, it nearly cost them the whole
company.
There are so few left trying to innovate... waldorf, novation, access
and doepfer, these are all small companies with a passion for synths,
not a marketing manager and accountant with a profit to fill!

<steps of soap box, takes cold shower and cools down>
sorry...

in my email with wolfram franke (waldorf) he is under the impression
that I just want a box that does a PPG sound.. I dont think he can
grasp that this more than just a noise/tone for me..... I want to
build a modular, I dont have a good reason why, I have reasons why i
shouldn't, expensive (per voice), big, awkward and unrreliable, but
for me this is part of the attraction, makeing things that people
couldn't do or hadn't thought of....

I still intend to make my wave scriber, 32 sliders which you draw
the waveform on, each been able to modulated from one 3 modulation
busses by varying amounts and each also haveing a seperate insert
aswell... ok, Im mad, it could be done with a dsp with
polyphonic/filters/vca/ringmod/etc/etc, but wheres the fun? wheres the
chip that smokes, the thrill of getting a noise from it?

<gets of soap box again>

sorry, I shall retire and find those nice men in their clean white
coats..

anyway, now you know my opion!
