I did a little experiment a while back using NURBS (non-uniform rational
bsplines) to mimic classic synth waveforms, with the ability to smoothly
morph between square, triangle, ramp, inverted ramp, and sine using only
three inputs; width, smoothness, and slope.
I went as far as creating a Java applet to display this and allow one
to play with the three parameters:

I haven't done much with it since, but it seems like a promising
