Kraftwerk used a Dectalk device used by the blind for computer access. They have
used other things but they have used the dectalk and have used it under other
names reflecting the software driver in use. I have had several of these, they
exist in many forms but the only roadworthy model is the DTC 01, it has a copper
sheilding inner case like the PCM F1 and it is bulletproof I still use one of my
two in my fx rack. (the other may be available)
Doing the hardware yourself is a hassle, and it's fragile. The DIY aspect of
this field is writing software routines. You can program these things to SING,
Rap , speed read and amazing stuff you can't produce on any other device.
Forget the Pink Floyd and Radiohead stepping through the default program, you can
do children with english accents and women and much more.
There are a lot of other speech devices out there that if purchased used can be
suitable and more reliable and cheaper than building one.
I do blind access as part of my living and now is a great time to purchase these
devices as blind users that are forced to migrate to SSIL speech systems because
of because of being forced to use GUI systems in their work lives. Blind people
are also selling off their gear because the GUI systems have forced many visually
impaired people out of work because windows access systems are inaccurate and
inefficient and slows them down so much that they have to give up their jobs
unless they have Braille skills. Don't believe the bull you see on tv , Blind
employment in the computer field dropped by 25% or so after the introduction of
Windows 3.1 and figures for post 95 and NT aren't in yet.
If anyone is interested any further in this subject or want help finding some
gear, get me privately please.
