Y-ellow Y'all.
What would be the prefered way to drive a bunch of LEDs these days? 2* 7
seg displays and up to 10 single LEDs. (Only one 'on' at a time)

Are things like 74xx42 BCD to Dec decoders still available?
How about 74XX46/47/48/49s?? (BCD to 7 seg)

Is there a readily available serial chip that will do all that? Either 3
wire or I2C?

What about the drive capabilities of a 8255? Would a CMOS version be able
to drive LEDs directly? (Or even an NMOS version for that matter. I have
lots of those.)

I've only got a few pins left if I wanna implement it this way. If it were
just for me I'd just lash something together but other people might wanna
build this thing so I have to be mindful of that. And then there's a minium
chip count issue as well. Chip-count = board space.

Thanks in advance.

be absolutely Icebox.
