You can make up a very cheap set of binaural microphones by using those
small electret mic elements and fitting them inside your ears.
If you make binaural recordings with your own head, they will carry all the
directional information your brain needs to get full 3d perception when you
play back your recordings on headphones. Other people should also hear the
3d effect, but it always works best for your own head.

PS did you know that hippos can tell exactly how far away a rival male is
from the time difference between his calls heard above and below water due
to the difference in the speeds of sound in air and water. Human hearing
ain't that good.
