The highly frequency specific filtering of the pinnae. A sound from
above will have notches in its spectrum in a far different place than a
sound from below, because the curves of the pinnae will cancel out some
frequencies and emphasize others. This is the principle of HRTF 3-D
audio from stereo speakers. Of course, it helps if your ears are exactly
the same shape as the ears used to make the HRTF measurements.
