You definitely want to check out Thomas Henry's site:
http://Techno5.lakes.com/~map/
He has some good Drum synth cookbooks. Along with
some kits for snares and bass drums.
Also, you may also want to look around for a used
Roland Octapad II. Besides the eight pads it has
6 mic inputs on the back. I've used these to "mic"
drum kits and use the midi output to trigger samples
or analog gear, of course, not telling the drummer
that I did this. "Wow, what did you do to make my kick
sound so good?" Didn't have the heart to tell him
his kick sounded so bad that I had completely replaced
it.
Even if you don't build any of the circuits in
Henry's Drum Cookbook, it is still worth having, because
he has circuits for every part of a drum sound with
descriptions. It help me create more realistic
patches on my modular.
One other item you may want to play with is CSound.
It is available free for most OS's. One of the
operators in CSound is a rhythm follower. I've
never played with it, but it seems it would
be interesting to a drummer who wanted his
sequences to follow the rhythm of his playing.
