musings/VU meter project

Hi all:
I am enjoying all the great discussions on this list ('cept it takes half of
monday morning to go thru them all)! The thread on the Hall effect pedal is
getting a little long in the tooth- what real advantage is there to using
one instead of an opto solution (or pots)?

One thing I am planning on doing is use some old Apple II joysticks for
filter/vco pots, with a db connector on my rack so I can just plug it in and
put the stick by the keyboard. They are cheap on ebay, and can be adjusted
for spring-back or no spring-back (and maybe the buttons could kick in
something...)
Now a question- I am going to build a rack mount (1U) stereo VU meter with
LED's spread across the panel, using a LM3916 (?) and am wondering what, if
any, mods or switches would be good on this; I have a buddy who works in a
machine shop (they build shuttle parts so I guess he can handle this) and
will drill/punch the panel for me. If anyone on the list is interested in
getting a panel let me know- I am not sure how many he would be willing to
run off for me but it seems a shame to do just one. I will point to point
the board (not much to it).
Any suggestions would be great!
