AW: "DIY" standards ???

Sorry, but I hafta agree with Juergen here. Apart from all of the extra
time and effort involved in standardizing our designs, we also deal with
people like me (ie poor college student who doesn't yet have keys to the
university pcb/machine shop) who would prefer not even to spend the money
on packaging. After buying components and vectorboard for a project, it's
nice to be able to cut a corner and just glue the thing into a margarine
tub. Also, see that there are too many different types of project to be
easily standardized. If all that was discussed here was synth modules,
maybe a standard makes sense. However, what about effects boxes? Should
these be racked? What about power supplies? It would be really stupid to
rackmount an RF theramin, so should we never post designs for these?
Juergen had an excellent point. Different packages have advantages and
drawbacks. Further, what about individuals who don't want to use the
standard? Maybe I can get all the vectorboard I want from school/work,
but only in strange sizes? Now I have to spend my time undoing someone's
work and laying out the board my way instead. Most importantly, though, I
think a standard would discourage people from making modifications to one
another's designs, and to me this is almost the point of DIY.
