SH-101 mods

In a related case, I've (finally!) been spending a bit of time over the
weekend making my sh-101 more modular. I put a row of 1/4" jacks above the
unit on the top, right where the battery holder is. I use the standard way
of going about modular-izing a unit... The default routings stay the same
until a jack is inserted. Right now it has:

3 outputs for all the different waveshapes (saw, pulse, sub-osc)
1 VCF audio input
1 in for VCF c/v
1 out for VCF c/v
1 out for random (s+h) modulation, cuz it's something I only have in my
larger homebuilt modular, which isn't too portable.
1 out for noise (ditty as above)
also the c/v and gate in/outs are 1/4", _not_ shoddy 1/8" connections. It's
much easier to interface with my other gear.

This makes the unit IMO slightly noisier, but overall it's worth it. It's
fun to ringmod the sub-osc and 1 normal osc together and send it back in.
Sounds pretty wonky! Though I'm not too impressed with the sound of the
filter processing external sources (like drums). Mostly cuz I don't have
an envelope follower so it's hard to track the drums to give the VCF any
sort of env modulation. Sounds ok w/tri LFO tho.

I think a gif+text file with a description of the place to apply external
input is on hyperreal. The placement for the oscillator seperate outs is
easy to figure out.. the different sliders for the waveshaping are marked
on the solder side of the synth PCB. I took pre-attenuated outs (on the
opposite side of the sliders as the wave symbol on the PCB, if that makes
sense) since I have attenuation on my ringmod, and just about every other
module I've built. Doubling up filters also gives a nice beefy sound as
well, since you can pick out 2 resonant frequencies.

modular sh-101 + buchla modular system 100 == slobber :)

hope this is useful..
