VCO - parasite AM, thumps and 'theremin' effect

Possibly the whole thing is oscillating at 2MHz or something like that as well, 
and as you go near it or touch parts this parasitic oscillation changes bias
etc....
try adding 0.1 microfarad ceramic bypass caps from the chip power supply inputs 
to earth, using the shortest possible paths.

weirdness is nearly always RF oscillation....
