I think that the Electroharmonix vocoder did this too, but someone please 
correct me if i am wrong.

The ckts in the book are:
compressor, expander, automatic level control, easy VCA, audio limiter, and
envelope follower. I guess you could do most of this from the data sheets but
for me it's a lot clearer from the Midwest book.
I suppose using a compressor with no filter cap on it would give an interesting
asymmetrical distortion, and who knows, perhaps a very small cap would give a 
soft 'valve' type distortion? Certainly, there is more to be done with this 
chip yet.
