Shepard and pitch shifting

Hi list,
I just wondered why these two topics are discussed seperately!
My attempt to archeive pitch shifting would be the same as trying to get
constantly rising pitch. I would use several delays with rising/falling
delay length,
and VCAs to blend these singals in and out, so no pops would be heared. So
I think
it can be done in the analog domain, but the setup would be enormous, like
a shepard generator whose saw outs determine the delay-time (i.e.
samplerate) and whose triangle outs determine the amplitude at the output
of the delays.
Hmm, that would be 8 VCAs 8 VC-Delays and a shepard generator!
Maybe it is possible to get away with 2 or 4 delays and control signals 180
or 90
degrees out of phase (?)
Bye
