Some of the items there are only $80, it looks pretty expandible. This is
the same chip used for the the BodySynth EMG to MIDI biofeedback controller
I did some work on in '89-'91. The company and made the 68HC11's with
embedded Forth is New Micros- they have a bunch of boards as well.

Making a MIDI interface for output with the 68HC11 is fairly trivial, all
you need is to put an HC04 buffer on the output of the serial port. The
hardest part is figuring out how to program the serial clock to run at the
MIDI baud rate, and how to bring it back to using the RS-232 rate the next
time you want to program it, since the MIDI port and the RS-232 port share
the same serial output. This is a great system for standalone
anything-to-MIDI converters, since it has a built-in 8-bit A/D with an
8-channel multiplexer right on the chip.
