I have also used Ampex 456 with the SpaceEcho I used to own.  Worked pretty
well for me, though I had to play around a bit with the length of the loop.
If I remember correctly, I used about 1/2 to 2/3 the amount of tape that
was in a Roland cartridge, so that I wouldn't get ridges in the tape.

I also changed it after every 5 to 10 hours of operation, as a reel made a
lot of loops...
