There have been several designs using the 8038 as a VCO,
but they're struggling to deal with the shortcomings of
the oscillator section. You'll find at least one in
Electronotes.
I'm currently rebuilding a Ken Gale "Wavemaker" dual
VCO which uses a conventional VCO followed by a 8038
as a sine waveshaper. It works very well.
I looked at the 8048/9 a few years ago for VCO use,
but they were more expensive than the Curtis CEM3340
at that time. Perhaps it's time to have another look.
