pitch shifting....the analog way???

I don't really know much about pitch shifting, but couldn't it be done with
a simple sine oscillator multiplied with the original signal? Then you
should get 
½Um(j(w+w0))+½Um(j(w-w0)). But then you shall get the both bands, and if
you want the single band, then it's Hilbert time, and I have no idea how to
do this.. Though I think it would be nice if someone could tell me what the
basic idea is behind pitch shifters, and what the basic difference between
those, phasers and flangers are...
