The 8038 has been discussed at medium length around here.  The general
consensus has been that it is not stable enough, nor does it have a wide
enough frequency sweep range for use as an audio VCO.  There may be some who
have found ways to prove this wrong, though.  Using it as an LFO might be
good, but it would probably be cheaper to make your VCLFO's with
LM13600/13700's.

<< The 8048/8049 are a log and antilog (exponential) amplifier,
respectively (maybe vice-versa).  They feature
adjustable offset and scale, and claim to be fully
temperature compensated.  Definitely intriguing. >>

Intriguing as heck, yes.  Unfortunately, the parts have been discontinued by
the maker (as of about two or three years ago).  I haven't been able to find
any of them anywhere.  If anybody has any leads on obtaining them, please
contact me.
