Sure, it is. But it works. Perhaps, pressing the string down on the
metal sheet with the normal "playing pressure", the contact is good
enough.

Sorry, could you explain this ? I don't know exactly, what you mean
with string tension. (This is not ELISA, speaking)
The steel sheet is necessary for contact between resistor-string and
steel. In principle, the whole construction is nothing else than a large
Pot.

The springs are only used for moving the whole manual up, when released.
They don't have to behave as strings. They dOn't have any electrical
function.
