alpha dials and inc/dec buttons

yes, look at "rotary contacting encoders".
These come in various shapes, precision etc, priced down to $10 or so.
As they rotate they put out binary output on 2 pins & the phase says which way 
it is rotating. The model robot guys love them.
I'm not Mr logic, but it looks like an encoder and one logic chip shd do it.
I'd like to see a ckt too!

And, I'd like to find a source of small rectangular 'chiclet' buttond for 
PCB mount, or similar, say 4mm by 8mm or around there.
