Charlie Tilson born October 20, 1955, passed through this life on Wednesday, Sept 2 at 11:25 pm in the arms of his wife after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sally Harris Tilson of Houston; his mother, Margie Kathleen Shine: his father, Joseph T. Tilson, and his sister, Kay Griffin, step parents Beverly Tilson and Hugh Shine, as well as numerous other relatives, in-laws, and nephews.

Charlie, a long time resident of Houston, enjoyed a successful career as a musician and singer in piano bars, clubs, and restaurants here in Houston and abroad. He was also a bandleader, teacher, and operated a recording studio.

Graduated from Friendswood High School in 1973 Charlie studied music briefly at University of Houston before deciding to pursue a career performing. In 1979 he married his soul-mate, Sally Harris from New Orleans, and they spent 19 happy years together in Houston.

He was most recently employed at The River Oaks Bar and Grill, but other notable appearances included State Department functions in Stockholm, Sweden, and in Washington D.C. He also performed for Presidents Reagan and Bush when they were in Houston. His band, Charlie T and The Third Degree, which included his wife, played for the opening of Moody Gardens, a cast wrap party for Kevin Costner’s Tin Cup, The Petroleum Club, and many weddings and events around the state.

Charlie will be remembered for his incredible talent, sense of humor, tremendous love of life and of fellow man, and most recently his courage and dignity in his battle with cancer.

His family wishes to thank the staff of University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital, especially Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri, Dr. William Morrison, and their nurses for their efforts and their compassion. Also, the many members of Charlie’s professional musical community who rallied around him and so generously and unhesitatingly gave of their time, talents, and love. A special thank you also to Jackie Lollis, LVN, and finally Houston Hospice, who were there for all of us in his final days.

"Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven, where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. "

In lieu of flowers, Charlie wanted any donations to be directed to M.D. Anderson Hospital, P.O. Box 297153, Houston, Texas 77297 in his name. A memorial service, officiated by his brother-in-law, Dr. Carl Walters and Dr. Patricia Bass will be held at Unity Church of Christianity at 3pm Sunday Sept. 6th. This will be immediately followed by a joyous celebration of his life from 4:30 - 6:30 PM at The River Oaks Bar and Grill, 2630 Westheimer at Kirby. Charlie wanted all family, friends, fans, musicians, physicians, and caregivers to attend this celebration.
