well there are 2 approaches:
1. provide a direct current input to the oscillator, bypassing the 
usual expnential generator, or
2. construct alog voltage convertor, as in Jung's 'Op Amp Cookbook'
or similar... yes, this is just as exactly as bad as the usual
exponential ckt... 
This is a square root function,
....not exactly... it is a log function, eg

50Hz 0.125V convert to 1 v
100Hz 0.25v conv to 2v
200Hz 0.5v conv to 3v
400Hz 1.0v conv to 4v    and so on
